Goodreads Tag – Rivka’s Answers

Sierra found another awesome tag, and can you believe that she tagged me in it? :P  You can read her answers here.

What is the last book you read?

Last book I read was The Exile Queen (review to come), but I only read the first 300 pages (it’s about 600 pages).  I didn’t finish it, so I’m not sure that counts.  The last book I finished was The Demon King.

What book are you currently reading?

Screen Shot 2016-01-10 at 2.06.00 PM

I’m reading this one for school.  It started out slow, but it is getting more interesting now.

What is the last book you marked as To-Be-Read?

jennydolfen_1024x1024

It’s full of Lord of the Rings fan art!  Speaking of which, it as been a while since I did a Today in Fan Art post.  Would you guys like to see another one soon?

What book do you plan on reading next?

Two more books for school.  At least they look interesting!

Screen Shot 2016-01-10 at 2.14.40 PM Screen Shot 2016-01-10 at 2.13.20 PM

Do you use the star-rating system?

YES!

Do you have a 2016 reading goal?

Yes.  My goal is 35 books.  I decreased my goal for the second year in a row because I expect to be even busier this year than I was last year.  Oh the college life!  This year will be crazy, but next year should settle down enough to at least allow me to read lots during the summer.

What book(s) do you plan on buying next?

Firstly – 95% of my books come from one of three libraries (the one I work for, the one in the next county over, the college library)

Secondly – Whenever I buy books, they are usually from a second hand store, so it is kinda hard to plan books I want to buy

Thirdly – I’m a poor college student without any money

Fourthly – I try to only buy books the library does not have or I know the author is really good

Fifthly – Every time I buy a new book I usually hear something about not needing any more books in our house from a family member.  Not that the opinion of a non-bookworm counts, but still…

What’s your favorite quote?

Who are your favorite authors?

Jill Williamson, Mary E Pearson, Lisa T Bergren, Ruta Sepetys, Shannon Dittemore, and Jordyn Redwood
(not that this list is totally inclusive)

Are you a part of any Goodreads groups?

Yes, several :)

What could Goodreads do better?

Half stars, drafts for reviews, easier way to sort and edit friends and bookshelves.

And that is The Goodreads Tag :) Now to tag some people.  Be sure to check out their blogs!

5 Books That Gave me a Book Hangover in 2015

Thanks to my blog buddy, Sierra, for tagging me!
You can read her answers here

A book hangover is

  • The inability to start a new book because you are still living in the old book’s world;
  • The inability to function at work/school because you can’t stop thinking about “the book.”

I don’t get too many book hangovers.  I credit this to the fact that I read most of my books before bed.  I finish a book before I go to sleep, and don’t pick another one up until the next night.  So I am listing the books that had me thinking about it all day long.  The only order is the order in which I read them this year.

One
Screen Shot 2015-12-20 at 6.04.06 PM

The symbolism in this book had me thinking about it for quite a while.

Did the dragon even exist?

I love books that can be analyzed over and over again, each time providing more things to discover.

I don’t even know where to begin with this book.  It was amazing!  It had me thinking about the spiritual warfare around us.  I started rereading it within a month because I could not stop thinking about it!

Three
Between-shades-of-gray

This is an amazing story about Soviet work camps during World War II.  Not only is this a side of the war I don’t hear about very much, it was a beautifully written book.  Despite the hard circumstances, the characters still found hope.  I have recommended this book to so many people!  The four people who actually read it, also enjoyed it! :)

Four

I ran into some “meh” books and was looking for an amazing book.  This book did it.  And it’s a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera.  What else is there to say?

Five
soundless

Another book with beautiful writing that I could not stop thinking about.  Since most of the characters in the book are deaf, it really made me aware how much I rely on my hearing!  I would go around thinking how different life would be if I could not hear things.

Early Autumn Tag

I was tagged by Random Smiles.  Go check out that awesome blog!
fall-clipart-dT7ddb8T9

Do you go out of your way to run through the autumn leaves?
Yes, I do!

Do you rake up the leaves on the lawn or do you leave them where they fall?
Leave them where they are.  I don’t really understand why people have to remove leaves from their lawn (unless they live in the woods where there are just so many leaves).  Lawns look pretty with this touch of fall!  And “perfect” lawns are overrated anyway.

How close do you sit to the fire before you get too hot?
Depends how cold the air is!  I do like to sit pretty close though.

Do you make hot chocolate from scratch or from the packet?
Packet.  I’ve never made it from scratch.  Maybe I should try that sometime…

Do you make hot chocolate with milk or water?
Water. Sometimes I’ll add a tiny bit of milk.

What’s your favourite pumpkin-based food?
Pumpkin pie has always been a favourite of mine.

Do you enjoy feeling the cold air, or do you wrap up warm?
Just a tad chilly is fine.  Not really a fan of cold.  Or hot.  But that is the great thing about spring and autunm; the weather is in between hot and cold :)

Do you buy autumn scented candles?
No….allergies, asthma….

Do you collect autumn leaves for pressing?
I use to love pressing leaves and flowers.  I haven’t taken the time in the past few years.

Do you travel away for the half term holiday?
My fall break is only 4 days this semester.  Then I get 4 more at Thanksgiving.  I won’t be traveling for either, but I will be spending time with extended family!

Are you more active during autumn, or more laid back?
More active

Do you spend more time outside or inside during autumn?
Inside because school.

Do you go pumpkin picking?
I have, twice.  It would be fun to do it again!

Do you have any traditions to celebrate the start of autumn?
Usually autumn brings my baking mood out.  But I really can’t this year because college :'(
Mom made some wonderful sweet potato pies, and that almost makes up for it.

Do you bake cookies during the autumn?
Yes!  I love baking.  Except, college. :/

Do you eat baked pumpkin seeds?
Never had them…

When you go outside, do you blow to see your breath?
Definitely! :D

Do you watch movies in bed, or in front of the fire?
I have not inside fire and I have no TV in my bedroom.  I watch movies curled up on the couch. :)

What’s your favourite roast dinner?
Beef!  And mashed potatoes and gravy!  Yum, yum.

Cold rain or dense fog?
Dense fog.  So much cooler and much easier for the imagination to run wild ;)

Fuzzy boots?
Not very practical…

Do you go hiking in the forest?
Yes, though I don’t do it too often.

Do you enjoy the sound of migrating birds?
I guess?  I usually watch when the birds start migrating to see if it will be an early winter.

Do you go apple picking?
My family use to do it every year, but now there is college.

What’s your favourite tea to drink in autumn?
Same as all the other times. Raspberry

Fluffy socks?
Not really my thing

Knitted scarves?
I have a few scarves that I love looking at, but I don’t ware them too often…

Do you make your own cider?
No

Do you read more books in the autumn or the summer?
Summer!  That is one of the best things about the season.  And the saddest thing about autumn starting….

How good are you at pumpkin carving?
I haven’t carved a pumpkin since I was maybe 10.  So I don’t think I would be any good at it.

The Courtship Book Tag – Rebecca’s answers

This tag was found at The Library in My Room.  Sierra already posted her answers here.  Now it is my turn! :D

And of course, with all of these questions there were many books that fit each category.

1.  Initial Attraction: a book you bought because of the cover.

Screen Shot 2015-07-31 at 11.48.40 AM

This is the second book in a series I have not started…yet.  But it looks really good, and I don’t like the updated covers, so I grabbed this one when I had the chance!

2.  First Impressions:  a book you got because of the summary.

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 11.16.50 AM

3.  Sweet Talk:  a book with great writing.

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 11.30.55 AM

I’m not even a “bonnet fiction” person, but I loved this book!

4.  First Date:  a first book of a series that made you want to pursue the rest.

CaptivesSafeLands

This has also made me want to check out all the other books by Jill Williamson

5.  Late Night Phone Calls: a book that kept you up all night.

Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 11.24.39 AM

Pretty much this whole series kept me up at night.  I remember this book specifically because I wanted to scream and freak out, but I did not want to wake anyone.

 6. Always On My Mind:  a book that you cannot stop thinking about.
Cover-with-Blurb-201x300

7. Getting Physical:  a book which you love the way it feels.
(I’m not even sure what this means bookwise…)
Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 1.21.04 PM
The cover is really pretty and the gold part is raise, so it is really fun to rub :)

8. Meeting the Parents:  a book that you would recommend to your friends and family.
Between-shades-of-gray
Best historical fiction ever.  I recommend it to absolutely everyone!!
(it is for mature readers – see this “review” for details)

9. Thinking About the Future:  a book, or series, that you know you’ll re-read in the future.
Screen Shot 2015-08-03 at 11.36.27 AM
This series is super fun, so I will definitely be reading it again in the future.

10.  Spread the Love:  Who would you like to tag?

And YOU!  If you are reading this and want to do the tag – go for it!

LotR Party Tag Questions

Sorry I missed posting yesterday.  It has been a really long week…

I was doing some exploring on Blogosphere, and found a really cool blog, and a really cool blog tag!  It’s from a while back, but it looked really fun, so here it goes!

This tag was found on inklings press!

Nine tag questions to rule them all….

1. What was your first introduction to Lord of the Rings?

I found Lord of the Rings the same way I found Narnia.  My brother handed me the book and I read it.

 2. Have you ever read the book?

I have read the Hobbit.  I read the first part of the Fellowship of the Ring, but stopped after Weathertop.  I can’t remember how old I was at the time, but I was really disturbed by the ringwraiths.  I bailed on the books and just watched the movies.  I seriously intend to go back and read them all!  But there are just so many books to read…

3. Which version of the movies do you prefer – the extended version or the theatrical release?

Extended hands down.  (duh!)

Screen Shot 2015-07-09 at 3.52.25 PMScreen Shot 2015-07-09 at 3.51.08 PM4. Who is your favorite character and why?

All of the elves, but particularly Galadriel and Legolas.  Galadriel is beautiful and mysterious and powerful.  She is the Lady of Lothlorien and a ring bearer.  What is not to love?
Legolas is a hot powerful archer. I was into archery before seeing Lord of the Rings, but I always think archer characters are cool.

5. Which of the other books concerning Middle-Earth have you read?

I just completed the Silmarillion last week!  It took me 6 months to “read.”  Actually I listened to the audio book, which was a HUGE help when it came to names.  Tolkien was so in depth about the history of Middle Earth.  That book is just mind blowing!  And overwhelming at times.

6. If there was one thing about the movies you would change, what would it be?

So, this would be for the Hobbit movie.  I hated the part in The Desolation of Smaug where Kili was forced to stay behind in Lake Town.  I pouted through the rest of the movie the first time I saw it.  It seriously tainted my enjoyment of the movie.  I have come to see why Peter Jackson would do that, but it does not mean I have to like it.  Oh and the whole dwarf vs. dragon fight and the melting gold statue was utterly ridiculous.  I have watched that movie again, but I fast forward most of the fight scene.

7. What is your favorite scene in either the books or the movies?

Anything in Rivendell or Lothlorien.  I want so badly to be an elf and live in one of the elven kingdoms!!

8. How would you rate your addiction to Lord of the Rings – Aragorn being the lowest and Gollum/Smeagol being the highest?

I will go with Sam.  I’m a loyal, committed fan.  I don’t know everything about all of Middle Earth, but I am working on that.

9. If you could be any Lord of the Rings character, who would it be?

Galadriel.  Though I would be content being a lowly silvan elf if it meant living in one of the elven kingdoms.  Preferably Rivendell, because that is where I fell in love with the elves, but I would visit Lothlorien often :)

And I will leave you with my absolute favorite fanart
