Dragons, School, and New Books

Hello everyone!  Rivka here.  I know I have been absent on blogsphere lately, but I do have good reasons!

I have been on an adventure in which I met a dragon and had to talk my way out of being eaten all while carrying a precious gem for a king friend of mine.  I’m just thankful that I made it back alive, and I will never forget the people I met on my adventuring.

Or, that’s what I’d rather have been doing.

Instead I have been busy with…

….wait for it….

The number one consumer of my time.  At least I’m learning new things, so that one day I can go slay dragons!

Currently, I am in the beginning of my most challenging semester to date, and just don’t have time to write up creative blog posts.  I’ve not even written proper book reviews lately!
I have decided not to feel guilty about this.  I’m not going to feel guilty about my lack of blog posts and book reviews.  I need a break from it so I can study and do well in my classes.

So, unfortunately, the hiatus is not going to end for the next two months. That is, unless I have a burst of inspiration and enough time to write it, then I will post!  But don’t count on it.

I’ll still be popping in and out on Goodreads and I’m trying to post once a week on Instagram, and you are welcome follow me there!

In other news, I took a break for half a day on Saturday and went to Uprise Festival.  If you don’t know what that is, you are missing out.  It is only the most amazingest Christian music festival ever!!

And being the bookworm, umm, I mean bookdragon that I am, I found the only vendor that had a small handful of books off to one corner of his table.  Yes, I can’t even go to a music festival without finding books!

I won’t get around to reading these for a while (because school), but I’m just happy to have them.  Look how pretty they are!  And they are about dragons too!

I hope you all are having a fantastic year.  Don’t miss me too much! (but don’t have too much fun without me either :P)

Happy Reading!

Top 5 Wednesday!

(For more information about Top 5 Wednesday go here.) This week’s theme is favorite first sentences! Let’s do this.

“There was once a time when only God knew the day you’d die.”

“The Hive bled.”

(this sentence just makes me laugh.)

“Theoretically, Blue Sargent was probably going to kill one of these boys.”

(this is more of a first paragraph.)

“Yeah, I know. You guys are going to read about how I died in agony, you’re gong to be like, “Wow! That sounds cool, Magnus! Can I die in agony too?'”

(I like that this is how Victoria Schwab first describes Kell.)

“Kell wore a peculiar coat.”

There you have it! My first T5W! What did you think?

About the Book (from cover jacket)
Since the tragic death of his girlfriend, Delia, Levi has refused to speak and can’t seem to come out of his depression. Desperate to make some positive change in Levi’s life, his mother sends him to live with his father in Maine. Though the idea of moving from Australia to America seems completely daunting, Levi passively accepts his fate.  Levi and his dad struggle to live together through resentment and misunderstanding. And then he meets Delilah, a girl who eerily reminds him of someone he lost.

My Thoughts

Oh, where do I begin?

I don’t usually read contemporaries.  Somehow, when I do read a contemporary, I choose the most emotional, tearjerker currently available to me.  I knew his book was going to be sad, but I didn’t expect it to make me cry as early or as often as I did.  I quickly learned that this was one to avoid reading in public.

Levi can seem pretty cold, but I understand a little bit of what he is feeling. Not that I was ever diagnosed with depression, but I know what it is like to have my world change forever. I loved seeing the relationships build between the characters.  It was a take-it-slow-get-to-know-each-other kind of relationships.  I love those dearly.  The pacing was fantastic.  There was definitely a lot of emotion packed into this book.  The emotional scenes were well done.

Ending can make or break a book, and this ending was……disappointing.  I don’t know.  It just was kinda obvious and not amazing.  I don’t know how to say this without spoilers, but the first two thirds of the book was leading up to this one event happening.  I was surprised when it happened so soon, as there was still a decent amount of book left.  After it happened, there was a shift, where the rest of the story lead up to the ending.

Other than that, I loved the book.  I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes contemporaries or emotional books.  Or anyone looking for a change of pace from their typical reading, kinda like I was.
